Science

Our Science series is based on the Cambridge Primary Science (0097) Curriculum Framework. The books provide a comprehensive resource and learner programme for Cambridge International Primary learners. It is also ideally suited as an extension series set at an internationally recongised standard.

The learner books covers the five strands: thinking and working scientifically, biology, chemistry, physics, earth and space as well as science in context. The series aims for learners to develop a curiosity about the natural world.

Each objective is introduced using the correct scientific vocabulary and clear and correct explanations of each concept, building a sound knowledge base. Illustrations, diagrams and photographs are used to enhance understanding and help learners contextualise science in their own lives. Spaced practise of the correct scientific vocabulary used with different examples, helps to ensure that learners do not develop misconceptions.

Rehearsal activities are designed to consolidate the knowledge base and develop scientific thinking skills.

Throughout the learner books integrated review activities are included, which require students to apply their knowledge and ensure spaced practice of the different concepts and skills.

STAGE 1 – LEARNER BOOK A

Professor Peter Pottsbottom and his Science Club learners: Beatrix, Lenny, Ronald, Sally and Kate; start their exploration of science, with the human and naming the main body parts.

Then, they explore different types of materials and discover how we use electricity in our daily lives.

Next, they learn about how we use our five senses to navigate the world around us.

Finally, they take to the skies to see Earth from space and learn about the land and the water.

STAGE 2 – LEARNER BOOK A

Professor Peter Pottsbottom and the Science Club learners start off the year in the science laboratory where they learn to sort materials into two groups, natural materials and manufactured materials. They learn about the natural material, rock and how paper is made.

This is followed by a study of animals, how they are different and how they are similar.

Back in the science laboratory the Science Club learn to build electrical circuits.

Dr Meerkat also pays a visit and teaches the science club about the human mouth and the different types of teeth.

The Science Club learners share their knowledge of the properties of materials and Professor Peter Pottsbottom explains how we need light to see.

STAGE 3 – LEARNER BOOK A

Professor Peter Pottsbottom and Science Club learners kick off the year learning how animals can be classified according to common features.

This is followed by an in-depth study of materials, including the different states of matter.

From Earth to space, Professor Peter Pottsbottom teachers the learners about the Solar System, how the Earth moves around the Sun and the different phases of the Moon.

The Science Club learners explore their environment looking at the living world versus the non-living world. They learn that all living things share characteristics of life, focusing on movement, reproduction, nutrition and growth.

Finally, in the science laboratory, Professor Peter Pottsbottom shows the learners how to carry out a fair test scientific enquiry that helps them understand how shadows are formed.
